YORK MINSTER
York Minster is one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals
Since the 7th century, the Minster has been at the centre of Christianity in the north of England and today remains a thriving church rooted in the daily offering of worship and prayer. The Minster was built for the glory of God. Every aspect of this ancient building - from the exquisite, handcrafted stone through to the unrivalled collection of medieval stained glass - tells the story of Jesus Christ. We invite you to discover this sacred place and the love of God at its heart, which has attracted people from across the globe for more than 1000 years.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, leads the northern province of the Church of England
His seat is at York Minster, where he was enthroned as the 97th Archbishop of York in 2005, but he is based at Bishopthorpe Palace. He usually attends and takes part in special services at the cathedral throughout the year including Easter and Christmas Day, the Ordination of priests and deacons and the Consecration of bishops from the northern province.
The Archbishop is also the Bishop of the Diocese of York, leading and guiding its faith and work. The Church of England is arranged geographically into 42 areas called diocese, each under the care of a bishop. The Diocese of York is one of the largest geographically in the Church of England, made up of 470 parishes, 607 churches and 127 schools.
As the mother church for the northern province, York Minster hosts a number of regional and national services, including the consecrations of bishops for this area.
