STAPLEFORD MINIATURE RAILWAY AND VINTAGE STEAM RALLY
In the heart of East Leicestershire, close to the River Eye, hidden behind Stapleford Park is one of Stapleford’s pride and joy - the Stapleford Miniature Railway.
The miniature railway is run by ‘Friends of the Stapleford Miniature Railway’ (FSMR) who organise special weekend events twice per the year. One weekend show in June and one in August. The Vintage Steam Rally often has Traction Engines, Vintage Cars, and Fairground Organs on show, plus a few trade stands. The money raised at the events goes to charity.
At busy times the railway can operate two locomotives using its signaling system. Families, especially children, love riding on the miniature railway. The additional vintage cars and engines on the special weekends add to the fun.
What started as a short line to ferry visitors to Lord Gretton’s beautiful home from the car park back in the late 1950s is now one of the most enjoyable miniatures in the UK. As the railway’s popularity grew, the line was expanded to run down to, and around the Haven Lake in the lush landscaped parkland. Stapleford celebrated their Golden Jubilee in 2008 - an unquestionable indication of Lord Gretton’s love of steam.
The event opens at 10.00am and admission is £5 for adults, £3 for children (5 and over), or £40 for a weekend ‘pass’ including camping or caravanning (2019).
For those planning an extended weekend, there are plenty of other activities around Stapleford including the Melton Carnegie Museum in Melton Mowbray or the Old Dalby Motorcycle Museum a little further afield.
Stapleford is about 20 miles North-east of Leicester and getting there could not be easier - get on to the A607 which runs east-west or the A606 which runs north-south, head to Melton Mowbray and turn east towards Bretingby and Stapleford.
